City-Wide Prayer Day - A Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving for Our City (11/20)

City-Wide Prayer Day

Many have had a growing burden for united corporate prayer for our city and community, especially in light of recent school shootings and violence. A number of area pastors joined together to host united corporate prayer at the Civic Center in August. On November 20th we will build on this foundation with A Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving for Our City. An invitation is extended to the Christian Community of Greater Huntsville to come together for this special time of PRAYER and THANKSGIVING.

Distinguished Speaker
General Charles Duke - Lunar Astronaut, Apollo 16

Charles Moss Duke, Jr., Brigadier General USAF (Ret), is a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduation from the Naval Academy and receiving his commission in the U.S. Air Force, General Duke entered pilot training and received his wings in September 1958. He served three years in Germany as a fighter interceptor with the 526th Fighter Interceptor at Ramstein Air Base. He was then reassigned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where in 1964 he earned a M.S. Degree in Aeronautics & Astronautics. In 1964 General Duke entered the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB. He logged 4,147 hours flying time which includes 3,632 hours of jet aircraft. In 1966, General Duke was one of 19 astronauts selected by NASA. The highlight of his experience as an astronaut was his serving as the lunar module pilot of Apollo 16 from April 16-27, 1972. Apollo 16 was the first scientific expedition to inspect, survey and sample materials and surface features in the Descartes region of the rugged lunar highlands.

Duke, accompanied by John W. Young, commenced his lunar surface stay of 71 hours and 14 minutes by maneuvering the lunar module "Orion" to a landing on the rough Cayley Plains. General Duke has logged over 265 hours in space, which includes 21 hours and 28 minutes in extra-vehicular activities. Duke served as the backup lunar module pilot for the Apollo 13 and Apollo 17 flights. In December 1975, General Duke retired from NASA to enter private business in San Antonio, Texas. He entered the USAF Reserves in 1975 and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1979 before retiring in June 1986. General Duke is currently the owner of Duke Investments. He resides in New Braunfels, Texas with his wife, the former Dorothy Meade Clairborne. They have two sons and three grandchildren. General Duke's hobbies include hunting, fishing, reading, flying, and golf.

Join us as General and Mrs. Duke provide insights about successful living as they share stories about their lives, their faith, and their marriage.
