Christian Advocates for Israel (CAFI)

In a time of growing international hostility toward Israel and the Jewish people - with international leaders publicly calling the holocaust a myth, stating their intent to wipe Israel off the map, and denying any historical Jewish connection to the Temple Mount, Jerusalem, or the Holy Land - there is a growing desire among many in the Christian community to stand as an advocate for Israel and the Jewish people in this volatile time.
A coalition continues to grow in the Greater Huntsville and North Alabama Christian community with a heart to honor Israel and the Jewish people for the heritage received, and explore opportunities of practical advocacy in prayer and intercession, in humanitarian relief, in community outreach, and in governmental and political advocacy, in this time when such anti-semitic rhetoric grows louder and bolder.
Who Are We? • Why? • Pro-Israel?
International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ)
www.ICEJ.org
In the summer of 1980, the Israeli Parliament declared the city of Jerusalem to be the undivided, eternal capital of the State of Israel, established as such by King David almost 3,000 years earlier. Protest resounded across the international political spectrum, resulting in the closure of thirteen national embassies in Jerusalem. A number of Christians living in Israel sensed Israel's deep hurt over the withdrawal of the foreign embassies and felt called to open a Christian Embassy in Jerusalem that became known as the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem as it represents Christians from around the world, speaking words of comfort and support to Israel.
Diplomacy of Love
The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem was founded in 1980 by Christians from around the world as an act of solidarity with the Jewish people's 3,000-year-old claim and connection to Jerusalem. Today the Christian Embassy represents millions of believers from over 125 countries who share a love and concern for Israel and the Jewish people, with active representation in nearly 80 nations. Some 50 full-time staff serve in our Jerusalem headquarters coming from over a dozen countries and speaking many different languages. We invite you to consider us as your Embassy in Jerusalem.
Work and Witness
The Embassy's work and witness is founded on the mandate of Isaiah 40:1, "Comfort, comfort my people" For more than 25 years the ICEJ has been reaching out in practical ways to the people of Israel, while seeking to inform, educate and inspire Christians round the world to stand against the rising tide of hostility and anti-Semitism directed against the Jewish State. Our Ministry spans four distinct areas, to Comfort Israel, Educate the Church, Celebrate God’s faithfulness, and Confront anti-Semitism.
Malcolm Hedding
ICEJ Executive Director
In November 2000, the Reverend Malcolm Hedding was appointed the Executive Director of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem after serving as an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God of South Africa for 25 years. Malcolm has a long relationship and love for Jerusalem and Israel. From 1986 to 1989, he served in Jerusalem as ICEJ Chaplain, and on the pastoral staff of the Jerusalem Christian Assembly, now the King of Kings Assembly.
Upon his return to South Africa in 1989, Malcolm founded the Olive Tree Assembly of God in Durban. He has been a seminar teacher and plenary speaker at the ICEJ's annual Christian Celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem and at other Embassy-sponsored events. He has also been an active member of the ICEJ Association, and traveled extensively as a "spokesman" of the ministry at the invitation of the international branches.
In February 2001, Malcolm was invited to chair the 4th Christian Congress on Biblical Zionism in Jerusalem, having been heralded as one of the foremost Zionist theologians in Christianity, with a profound understanding of Israel's role in Eschatology. Since 1991 he has also served as Chairman of "Christian Action for Israel", a biblical Zionist organization.
Malcolm lives with his wife Cheryl in Jerusalem. They have three children, and three grandchildren.

Teen Challenge Endorsement
“I’ve believed in this ministry since its very beginning. And I continue to support it. I consider it a real privilege to endorse this work. Thank God for Teen Challenge!” - Rev. Billy Graham
"Not only does Teen Challenge help our young people deal with their substance abuse, but it also gives our kids something to live for - a relationship with God, a healthy self-esteem, and a direction in their lives that finally leads somewhere. I speak from more than 20 years of knowledge of the organization when I tell you that the Teen Challenge program works. It’s effective - it’s literally changing lives of young Americans from every walk of life. The government can’t do it alone no matter how hard it tries. It’s going to take the all out effort of concerned citizens like you and me to help turn the tide of drug abuse among kids. And the good news is that together we can and will do it." - President Ronald Reagan

Dear Pastors,
As a former Huntsville area pastor I know first-hand the overwhelming need for Christ in the lives of our addicted young people. I presently serve Alabama Teen Challenge as the State Director of Operations, and I want to very respectfully remind you that the follow-up Greater Huntsville Teen Challenge Organizational Meeting on Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 at HOPE CHURCH, Madison. Please plan on being in attendance; or, if you can not be there personally, please send a representative from your church.
In Alabama, 467,000 of our residents have used an illicit drug in the past year, 256,000 have used in just the past month affecting over one million Alabamians in the past 30 days.[i] In the Huntsville area the numbers are staggering. We have an epidemic – Alabama Teen Challenge is a growing statewide with a Great Commission centered solution to addictions. Since 1958 Teen Challenge remains the highly effective world-wide provider of discipleship ministry for those who would be evangelized and look to Christ to transform their lifestyle and develop a new life free in Christ from the devastation of drug and alcohol abuse. Teen Challenge is seven hundred centers in ninety-three countries.
Our area needs to know there is an answer to life controlling problems for our addicts through the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. The answer for these who are trapped is their total surrender to a Savior who would rather die than live without them – Teen Challenge is a missionary outpost for Christ that successfully reaches those trapped in this epidemic. Teen Challenge has young adult students from every walk of life – currently represented are those who were living on the street to a pilot from a major airline.
Many young adult addicts from our area have already been helped through Alabama Teen Challenge’s residential discipleship programs across the state. In our meeting we will also hear from one TC graduate who was in eight secular drug programs before finding Jesus in Alabama Teen Challenge.
The vision: In the Huntsville/Decatur/Athens area, two needed adolescent ministries (ages 13-18) will be opening. Once opened, residential Christ centered discipleship will be available to Huntsville residents of virtually any age or income in concert with the young adult ministries throughout our state. Alabama Teen Challenge is in full cooperation with area churches, and has the full endorsement of the Huntsville Pastor’s Prayer Summit.

Young Business Leaders (YBL)
Summer Luncheon
11:30am Friday, June 27th, 2008
Huntsville Marriott
5 Tranquility Base
Captain Scott M. Smiley
2007 Army Times Soldier of the Year
Topic: Leadership
Captain Smiley began his career with the Army soon after his 2003 graduation from the US Military Academy at West Point . It could well have ended April 6, 2005, in Mosul , Iraq , when he faced down a car bomber from the hatch of his Stryker combat vehicle. That moment—and his decision not to shoot the driver—would change his life forever. When the car bomber detonated his payload just 30 yards in front of the Stryker, Smiley’s eyes were permanently destroyed.
Captain Smiley finds no obstacles to living life and musters the courage to do it every day—he walks to work by memorizing the number of steps and the directions to turn. He continues to enjoy physical activities like running, cycling, surfing, and sky diving! Also, Captain Smiley has not allowed blindness to prevent him from climbing Mt. Rainier in Washington , proving that he is truly “ARMY STRONG.”
Captain Smiley is currently finalizing his MBA at Duke University with the intention of instructing Behavioral Science and leadership at the US Military Academy at West Point.
We invite you and a guest to come hear and meet Capt. Smiley as he shares lessons on Leadership from a Biblical perspective.
Cost: $15/person or $120/table of 8. Register by calling the YBL office at 882-6003 or email ybl@arilion.com (We will confirm your registration by email.) Registration deadline is Monday, June 23rd.

May 21, 2008
Dear Pastor,
I am writing this letter to you to inform you about two events:
The Man in the Mirror (with Pat Morley)
Event Number 1: I would like to invite you and the men of your congregation to attend an exciting men’s event late this summer! Pat Morley, author and speaker, will be here in Huntsville to present his personal story—the event is entitled, “The Man in the Mirror Experience!” It will be held at Southwood Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 23rd from 8am to 1pm
Pat understands men. He is “highly” qualified to speak to you and your men. Pat has devoted his life to establishing men’s ministries in local churches and through Para church ministries like the Promise Keepers. He established and leads (as President) The National Coalition of Men’s Ministries—a national organization which seeks to network denominational leaders and Para church ministries so as to make men and men’s ministries a priority within the local church—(this organization currently has over 80 men’s ministries involved). Also, Pat recently completed his PhD in Men’s Ministry on top of the fact that he has authored 11 books on topics relating to men! Need I say more about his qualifications to speak to your men?!!
Pastors/Men's Ministry Leadership Luncheon
Event Number 2: The second event I would like to invite you to is a pastors/men’s leaders luncheon set for Wednesday, June 18th at 12:00 noon at Southwood Presbyterian Church
The luncheon will last 1 hour. The purpose of the luncheon is to inform you about the details surrounding the event which will include a strategy to help you minister to your men and ways that this event will be a resource to you—not as an end in itself—but something that you can build on to help you reach and disciple your men! We are inviting both you (pastor) and one man who you’ve appointed to take the lead on promoting this event. In other words, we want you to come—but we also want you to come with one guest who will assist you in providing leadership for this event!
Little Paul’s BBQ is providing lunch, and we are picking up the tab! Please RSVP for the luncheon by email (ybl@arilion.com) or phone (882-6003) by noon on Monday, June 16th. Please note RSVP is required with max of one guest, associate pastor, or men's ministry leader.

Serving the City as One - Report and Benefit Concert (6/13)
|
|
 |
|
Dear Friends,
We don’t have all the reports in at this time but I can make a good ball park guess on the number of participants, the number of projects, and the number of congregations involved.
After all is said and done there were between 1100 and 1200 people serving on April 19, 2008 in the name of Christ. Over 86 projects were completed by over 35 different congregations representing 11 different denominations/segments of our Christian community. The impact for Christ will be in some cases forever but we believe the impact of the service day resulted in touching the lives of 6000 – 7000 people in our community. Included in the 86 projects there were 6 schools adopted, 5 block parties, 15 construction sites, a trailer park residences were given free smoke detectors (two trailers burned last year), 7 large landscaping projects were completed, many packing projects (such as nursing centers, hospital waiting rooms, aids coalitions help packs, National Children’s Advocacy Center children’s packs, teacher appreciation boxes, fire house goody boxes, sewing for hospice patients, and many more), all four outdoor basketball backboards and goals replaced at Stone Middle, 40 people helping in environmental projects, and many others around the city.
Thanks for a job well done for many of you who provided leadership in some way to make the day a wonderful day of focus on others.
Mark your calendar now for Saturday, April 18th 2009 for the next Serving the City as ONE!
I would like to encourage your churches to come hear the David Crowder Band at First Baptist Church on Friday, June 13th 2008 . I mention it specifically because all of the $10 ticket charge will go to fund the 2009 Serving the City as ONE. The sanctuary can hold 1750 people and that will mean over $17,000 will help fund next years effort. (I would estimate that over $25,000 was used by all involved in some way for Serving the City efforts this year) Bring your students and young adults to the concert to enjoy this Dove Award winning Band (3 Dove awards were presented to the Band on April 23 including the best worship album of the year) Tickets are available now at the Christian Life Center of First Baptist which is directly across from the public library. 256-428-9445 or email the CLC at clc@fbchsv.org for more information. The CLC is typically open each day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Please help pass the word about Serving the City next year to other churches, pastors, and church leaders. We hope to have a hub church in Madison , north Huntsville , and south Huntsville where the surrounding churches can be involved closer to your own neighborhoods. Watch for interest meetings in October and November and encourage your congregation to be involved in many different ways next year.
Hand in Hand,
Mike Pearce
Coordinator for Serving the City as ONE
Minister of Missions and Outreach
