57th Annual National Day of Prayer - America's Strength and Shield (5/1)
|
|
 |
National Day of Prayer
www.NDPTF.org
Thursday, May 1, 2008
About The National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America when the Continental Congress issued a proclamation setting aside a day of prayer in 1775. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
Mission
The National Day of Prayer Task Force's mission is to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the seven centers of authority and influence: Government, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church and Family.
President George W. Bush and all 50 governors proclaim the 57th annual National Day of Prayer
National Day of Prayer 2008
The 57th Annual National Day of Prayer will take place Thursday, May 1, 2008. The theme for this year is "Prayer! America's Strength and Shield" and is based on the verse from Psalm 28:7 which states: "The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped."
Dr. Ravi Zacharias will help lead this nation in prayer as the 2008 Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer.

Holocaust Remembrance Day - Special Community Service
|
|
A special relationship continues to grow between the local Jewish and Christian communities. Please see the invitation below from Laura King (President, Jewish Federation of Huntsville and North Alabama) for the community service the Jewish community is hosting for Holocaust Remembrance Day. The host location will be Trinity United Methodist Church so the community may have opportunity to share in this time.
Part of this evening and memorial will include a moment to honor one of the "Righteous Among the Nations (Gentiles)" - someone who has been a special friend to the Jewish community in the past year. This year that honor will be presented to a local pastor, Robert Somerville (Director Awareness Ministries, Pastor Covenant of Peace Church).
We live in a time when presidents of nations are boldly calling the Holocaust a "myth" ... SELAH ... Have we already forgotten? Even worse, could it really be that Haman has lifted up his head again so soon?
The Jewish Federation of Huntsville and North Alabama Cordially invites you to an observance of
Yom Hashoah
Holocaust Remembrance Day
7pm Thursday, May 1, 2008 Reception to follow
Host Location
Trinity United Methodist Church
607 Airport Road, S.W. Huntsville, Alabama 35802
Holocaust Remembrance Day is a day that has been set aside for remembering the victims of the Holocaust and for reminding Americans of what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and indifference reign. The United States Holocaust Memorial Council, created by act of Congress in 1980, was mandated to lead the nation in civic commemorations and to encourage appropriate Remembrance observances throughout the country. The internationally–recognized date comes from the Hebrew calendar and corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on that calendar. That is the date on which Israel commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. When the actual date of Yom Hashoah falls on a Friday (as will happen in 2008) the state of Israel, following the Knesset legislation establishing the event, observes Yom Hashoah on the preceding Thursday.

Mission: Our mission is helping every person discover and develop a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ as we grow together in grace and truth.
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19)
All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth. (Col. 1:6)

About Pastor Bobby Gordon
Pastor Bobby Gordon became a Christian when he was eight. In his early twenties, he made public God's call upon his life to follow Him in a full-time Christian vocation. He was licensed to ministry by West Hartselle Baptist Church in Hartselle Alabama in 1986 and ordained by the same church the following year. Since that time, he has been preaching and involved in ministry; seriously dedicating himself to learning and doing the will of God. Before planting Legacy, Bobby was a founding co-pastor of both The Church at Hampton Cove (1998-2006) and Rocket City Community Church (1995-1998).
Before coming to Huntsville, he served as pastor and youth pastor at several other churches. The greatest desire of Bobby’s heart is to fervently love God with a pure heart and express that love by serving people. God has blessed him with a supportive Christian wife, Angie, who he married in 1986, and four precious children. His family is very important to him and under God they are his number one priority. As a result of having a strong family commitment, he believes God has enabled him to be a more effective minister. God has given him a pastor's heart and a genuine desire to build up and encourage the body of Christ to fulfill His mission. To this high calling of God in Christ Jesus, he gladly dedicates his life.

Dear Pastors,
As a former Huntsville area pastor I know first-hand the overwhelming need for Christ in the lives of our addicted young people. I presently serve Alabama Teen Challenge as the State Director of Operations, and I want to very respectfully remind you that the first Greater Huntsville Teen Challenge Organizational Meeting is Monday, May 5, 2008 at HOPE CHURCH, Madison. Please plan on being in attendance; or, if you can not be there personally, please send a representative from your church.
In Alabama, 467,000 of our residents have used an illicit drug in the past year, 256,000 have used in just the past month affecting over one million Alabamians in the past 30 days.[i] In the Huntsville area the numbers are staggering. We have an epidemic – Alabama Teen Challenge is a growing statewide with a Great Commission centered solution to addictions. Since 1958 Teen Challenge remains the highly effective world-wide provider of discipleship ministry for those who would be evangelized and look to Christ to transform their lifestyle and develop a new life free in Christ from the devastation of drug and alcohol abuse. Teen Challenge is seven hundred centers in ninety-three countries.
Our area needs to know there is an answer to life controlling problems for our addicts through the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. The answer for these who are trapped is their total surrender to a Savior who would rather die than live without them – Teen Challenge is a missionary outpost for Christ that successfully reaches those trapped in this epidemic. Teen Challenge has young adult students from every walk of life – currently represented are those who were living on the street to a pilot from a major airline.
Many young adult addicts from our area have already been helped through Alabama Teen Challenge’s residential discipleship programs across the state. In our meeting we will also hear from one TC graduate who was in eight secular drug programs before finding Jesus in Alabama Teen Challenge.
The vision: In the Huntsville/Decatur/Athens area, two needed adolescent ministries (ages 13-18) will be opening. Once opened, residential Christ centered discipleship will be available to Huntsville residents of virtually any age or income in concert with the young adult ministries throughout our state. Alabama Teen Challenge is in full cooperation with area churches, and has the full endorsement of the Huntsville Pastor’s Prayer Summit.

"Not only does Teen Challenge help our young people deal with their substance abuse, but it also gives our kids something to live for - a relationship with God, a healthy self-esteem, and a direction in their lives that finally leads somewhere. I speak from more than 20 years of knowledge of the organization when I tell you that the Teen Challenge program works. It’s effective - it’s literally changing lives of young Americans from every walk of life. The government can’t do it alone no matter how hard it tries. It’s going to take the all out effort of concerned citizens like you and me to help turn the tide of drug abuse among kids. And the good news is that together we can and will do it." - President Ronald Reagan |
